The Trial of Our Times: Pakistan and the LGBTQ+ (Homosexuality) Fitna

By: Qalbun Yaqzaan | قلبٌ يقظان — A heart that can no longer sleep

A Wake-Up Call from Lahore

There are moments that burn into one’s memory and refuse to fade. Recently, a video went viral of men in Lahore, dressed in drag, making indecent gestures at a private event. It was marketed as “art,” but in reality, it was nothing less than shameless indecency. I still cannot shake those satanic images out of my mind.

I first came across it through Maria B – a fashion designer who has consistently raised her voice against this fitna. A handful of people like her are vocal, fearless, and unafraid to call it what it is: an imported agenda, eating away at the moral fabric of Pakistan.

Let me be clear: I am not speaking about the rare, genuine cases of transgenderism that Islam has always recognized — cases of khuntha mushkil (biological intersex) that require joint collaboration between government and scholars to ensure such individuals are granted their rightful place in society, with proper lifestyle arrangements, medical care, educational facilities, and dignified rights in line with Shariah. That is our path of mercy, clarity, and justice.

My post is about biological men and women who knowingly abandon the roles Allah has assigned them, dressing shamelessly, promoting homosexuality, and demanding validation under the banner of “rights.” This is not identity — this is rebellion against Allah. And rebellion against Allah never ends well.

Islam’s Clear Stance on Homosexuality

“Do you commit such immorality as no people before you have ever committed? … You lust after men instead of women! You are certainly transgressors.” (Al-A‘raf 7:80–81)

This was the crime of the people of Prophet Lut (AS). Despite every warning, they mocked their Prophet and insisted on pursuing their desires. At the end, their towns were overturned, and Allah ﷻ rained upon them stones from the sky. Their destruction was made an eternal lesson:

“We poured upon them a rain ˹of brimstone˺. See what was the end of the wicked!” (Al-A‘raf 7:84)

The Prophet ﷺ also said: “The thing I fear most for my nation is the deed of the people of Lut.” (Tirmidhi)

This is not a matter of culture, preference, or personal choice. It is a matter of obedience to Allah. Islam is submission — not selective obedience.

Scientific & Scholarly Clarity

Despite decades of research, no scientific evidence has proven homosexuality to be innate or fixed. A landmark study published in Science (2019) involving nearly half a million people confirmed there is no “gay gene.”

Islamic scholars across centuries have unanimously condemned homosexual acts as haram. Our jurists differed only on the worldly punishment, not on the immorality of the act. Contemporary scholars – from Mufti Taqi Usmani to Shaykh Yasir Qadhi – reaffirm this stance: compassion is for individuals, but normalization of sin is unacceptable.

Pakistan’s Laws — Where We Stand

In 2023, the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) declared that parts of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018, particularly those allowing self-perceived gender identity, were un-Islamic. However, this ruling is still under appeal and not yet enforceable

Meanwhile, National Database and Registration Authorities (NADRA) continues to issue “X” category ID cards for Transgenders, but under conditional guidelines. I personally spoke with NADRA helpline staff, and based on my cursory review of NADRA Registration Policy RP-6.0.0 (dated June 4, 2025), the process is as follows:

  • Same-sex gender transitions (e.g., male to transgender male or female to transgender female) are processed based on appearance or a verified computerized birth certificate.
  • Cross-sex changes (male to female or vice versa) require a verified medical certificate issued by a Government or Foreign hospital.Gender from Male to Female and vice versa shall only be entertained on provision of medical certificate (verified) issued by Government / Foreign hospital.” (RP-6.0.0, Page 15)

Additionally, special cases/exemptions – such as those involving transgender individuals – must be referred to Regional DGs1/Directors after evaluation and interview of cases at Verification Board2. (Policy, Page 5).

These requirements, if implemented sincerely, offer necessary checks to prevent misuse. But their effectiveness ultimately depends on whether authorities uphold them with integrity and God-consciousness.

🔒 We can only hope – and expect – that Pakistan’s institutions are fulfilling this responsibility honestly, transparently, and in full alignment with Shariah. Any deviation from truth and justice risks inviting not just public confusion, but the displeasure of Allah ﷻ.

This is not just a bureaucratic detail. It’s a moral trust – and a test of whether we, as a nation, truly mean it when we say: Pakistan ka matlab kya? La ilaha illallah.

The Fashion & Entertainment Industry: A Trojan Horse

Let us not be blind: fashion shows, dramas, and films are increasingly used to normalize this fitna. Under the guise of “art” and “progress,” homosexuality and gender rebellion are slipped into storylines, ads, and performances. The industry has become a Trojan horse, smuggling in values alien to our culture and faith. And our youth – hungry for trends – absorb these messages without realizing the poison beneath the glitter.

Western Pushback: A Global Reckoning

Ironically, even in the West, where this ideology was born, governments are beginning to recognize its dangers. In the US, multiple states banned puberty blockers for children. In the UK, the Cass Review (2024) halted their use entirely. Sweden, Norway, and Finland also rolled back gender treatments due to evidence of lifelong harm.
If even secular nations are now acknowledging the harm, what excuse do we – a Muslim nation founded in the name of Allah – have for embracing it?

Who Is Standing Up Against This Fitna?

Amidst the noise, a handful of voices in Pakistan are courageously unmasking the infiltration of homosexual ideology into fashion and education; warning youth of the spiritual and social consequences of homosexuality; campaigning against policies that normalize it; and platforms engaging the youth directly and dismantling Western arguments. They are mocked, silenced, and branded “extremists” – yet in truth, they are doing what our leaders should be doing.

The Role of Parents and Society

We cannot remain idle. Parents must guard their homes – watching what their children consume online, who they befriend, and what values are shaping their hearts. Schools, too, must be vigilant. Do not send your children to institutions or events that normalize immorality.

“O believers! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, overseen by formidable and severe angels, who never disobey whatever Allah orders – always doing as commanded.” (At-Tahrim 66:6)

The Duty of the State and Police

The state cannot be silent. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) funded by foreign agendas must be scrutinized, and their operations halted if they seek to dismantle our faith and culture. Police must uphold morality – freedom does not mean the freedom to destroy society.

My Closing Remarks

We stand at a crossroads. Either we heed the warnings of Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ, or we risk the same fate as past nations. This fitna must be resisted with wisdom, courage, and conviction. The responsibility lies with all of us:

What needs to happen now

  • Government & Scholars: must urgently revise the transgender law — closing loopholes that allow misuse while ensuring genuine intersex (khuntha mushkil) individuals are protected with dignity, medical care, and Shariah-compliant rights. At the same time, laws must be enforced to prevent the normalization of homosexuality.
  • Scholars: must step beyond seminaries – engaging on public platforms, in media, and at policy tables to guide society with the light of Qur’an and Sunnah.
  • Parents: must remain alert – guarding what their children watch, learn, and absorb, and instilling pride in Islamic identity before confusion takes root.
  • Rehabilitation: must be developed — to help those who’ve fallen into this trap return with compassion, and rediscover that Islam offers clarity, peace, and purpose.

If we fail in this duty, we risk losing not just our values but our very claim of being a Muslim nation.

May Allah grant us wisdom to resist, courage to speak, and steadfastness to protect our children. May He guide those who have strayed to repentance. May Allah protect our families, our nation, and our future from their fitna, and may He perish those who seek to destroy us from within. Ameen.
